“So Jesus said to them, ‘The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.’”
John 12:35-36 ESV
He’s getting so big … and so creative … and so loving … and so inquisitive … and so determined … and so tender-hearted.
He unapologetically marches to his own beat and makes friends wherever he goes.
He roots for everyone, cheers when they succeed, offers encouragement when they don’t.
He teaches me about the person I am, about my strengths and my weaknesses.
He forgives easily and extends grace (most of the time) and doesn’t hold grudges.
He sings his prayers and tells one epic adventure of a story.
He loves ice cream almost as much as he loves LEGOs.
His memory and quick recall both amaze and terrify me. Father God, protect his growing mind!
He turned six years old today, and the older he gets the more I pray he allows God’s LOVE to shape who he is rather than what the world says about him … because this world needs him, as it needs all of our children and their innocence, their optimism, their faith, their bright hope, their ingenuity, their laughter, their joy.
He is one-of-a-kind, meant for a one-of-a-kind life, lead by our one-of-a-kind God, Who loves with a one-of-a-kind love that saves each of us with the one-of-a-kind sacrifice of a one-of-a-kind Savior, Who freely and generously extends His one-of-a-kind grace and salvation right where we are on our own one-of-a-kind journey and molds us into the one-of-a-kind souls we are meant to be.
The truth is that my son is not my own, not really. He belongs to his Creator, who entrusted him into my love and care this side of heaven. As he lifted his backpack around his shoulders this morning, ready to take on the day, I couldn’t help but marvel for a moment at how much he has grown and changed and at who he is, his eyes bright and clear and heart ever expanding.
I whispered as he bent to hug me, “Sweet boy, God chose YOU for me and your daddy and chose US for you … because He knew we needed each other. You are so loved.”
God always knew and knows every millisecond of what is to come, remaining faithful to see His perfect will through to completion for all of us.
May this precious child unceasingly know Whose child he is, becoming a “son of light” (John 12:36), and may his life be a reflection of the Lord’s glory and love. May mine be worthy of this calling as his mother.
Thankful is an understatement. This big, tender part of my heart feels closer to overwhelming gratitude, peace, joy, hope … as close to unconditional love as my earthly body and mind can journey.
And what a gift this journey is—the very best gift on this happiest of days!
